5 Points To Consider Before Selecting A Domain Name

Domain names are the web addresses and names of your website. They represent you on web. It is very important that you select your domain name carefully.

It’s not an easy task to change the domain name of your blog after the fact; it’s not good for your branding, not good for your search ranking, and will give you a lot of headaches that are not good for your health.

Make sure you take care of the following factors while selecting the domain name for your website.

1. Unique & Descriptive

You should always select a name which tells others what your website is about. Your domain name represents your website, and it should be relevant to your blog niche.

You should also shoot for a unique domain name so that people don’t confuse your site with another.

2. Keep It Short

There is no harm in using a long domain, but short domains are easier to remember.

But if you want to select a long domain name, make sure that it is easy to remember.

3. Make It Simple

Make sure the name is simple. Try to avoid using names with hyphens or numbers, or names that are very tough to remember and spell.

There are millions of blogs available, and if you use a hard to remember domain name, your blog will not be the first one people think about when they go to find information.

4. Avoid Trademarks

Before registering a name, check that it is not trademarked by someone else or some other company.

If you don’t take care of avoiding trademarks, you might find yourself in the middle of a lawsuit.

Another thing to remember is to make sure you register your name as soon as you come up with it. Every day there are thousands of new blogs created so someone might snatch up that name.

5. Use Domain Name Checker Tools

There are many domain name checker tools available online for free.

Such tools are easy to use and no registration is required. You just need to type in your selected domain name and check if it is already taken.

You can use DomainChecker.com, you can search on the ICANN official WhoIs, or you can just go to GoDaddy and search (the easiest).

I hope these tips will help you make your domain name search easy. If you have more tips do share with us in the comments below.

  1. Blogging Experience Shared

I agree with your points, they all are simple and very true.

Can you provide an explanation regarding how to check whether a (domain) name is trademark-ed by someone else (or a company)?
Well, I was thinking if there is a simpler way to do it, instead of doing research with Google.
